PCB chairman Ehsan Mani wants teams to return to Pakistan

The return of limited-overs international cricket to Pakistan after a 10-year absence following a terrorist attack targeting a foreign team has coincided with a renewed plea from the country's cricket chief to recommence full, in-bound tours. Pakistan had a 67-run victory over Sri Lanka on Monday to kick start the important cricket homecoming, which was delayed an extra couple of days because of the weather. It is the first time since Sri Lanka's team bus was attacked on the way to a stadium at Lahore in 2009 that a foreign team is conducting a two-week tour of Pakistan. Major teams have avoided the country since the ambush that killed eight people and injured several star players. Twitter lets users sideline unwanted direct messages

Twitter on Monday said it is rolling out a filter that will hide away unwanted direct messages, providing a new tool to stymie abuse. Twitter users who receive direct messages from people they don’t follow on the platform will be able to have such missives automatically routed to a secondary folder. “Unwanted messages aren’t fun,” Twitter tweeted in August when it began testing the filter that let users keep them “out of sight, out of mind.” The filter is intended to also catch messages with spam or offensive content, tagging them accordingly so users can decide whether they want to open them. “We tested, and turns out filters help you cut through the noise to find gems,” Twitter said Monday in a tweet. “Who knew. So we’re rolling out this filter to everyone on iOS, Android, and web.” Twitter has been under pressure to battle abuse and vitriol on the platform known for letting anyone express themselves to the world in real-time. Govt looks for local firms to invest in Reko Diq

LAHORE: The Balochistan government is trying to persuade large Pakistani investors to form a consortium to invest their money in the development of Reko Diq copper and gold mining project. “Our first priority is to convince Pakistani companies to invest in this project because neither the provincial nor the federal government has the finances for developing this resource that will prove a game changer for both Balochistan and the entire country,” provincial chief minister Jam Kamal Khan said during an interaction with senior journalists at the Punjab Governor’s House on Monday. “The development of the project [for commercial production] requires an initial investment of $3-4 billion, which is in addition to the $6bn awarded by the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) in July against Pakistan for terminating agreement with the Tethyan Copper Company (TCC). “We want Pakistani businessmen to put their money in this project because it has the potential to

FIFA backs Normalisation Committee after Hayat criticism

KARACHI: The disapproval and denunciation finally came openly. It wasn’t enough to bother FIFA. After statements from officials of his faction, former Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) chief Faisal Saleh Hayat publicly expressed his views on the FIFA-appointed Normalisation Committee for the first time on Sunday, calling it “controversial, biased, and agenda-driven.” A video of Hayat speaking to a group of officials of the Punjab Football Association shows him claiming that he’s informed both global football body FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) about his reservations over the composition of the Normalisation Committee as he tore into the body’s chairman Humza Khan. “This is a FIFA committee so we won’t comment,” an AFC spokesperson told Dawn on Monday when asked about Hayat’s comments. FIFA was more clear, once again firmly backing the Normalisation Committee it has put in place to resolve the Pakistan issue once and for all. “As already mentioned, the Normalisa

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly on the opening day of its autumn session on Monday witnessed a heated debate between Ali Wazir and Mohsin Dawar — independent members from the tribal areas backed by the Pashtun Tahaffuz Movement (PTM) — and federal ministers, with the government offering an olive branch to the organisation, but with certain conditions. The offer to the PTM for talks was made by two key members of Prime Minister Imran Khan’s cabinet — Defence Minister Pervez Khattak and Interior Minister retired Brigadier Ijaz Shah — with the condition that the PTM members would only follow “Pakistan’s agenda” and would not target armed forces in their speeches. “The army also wants to come out from there [Waziristan]. If your agenda is Pakistan, then I am ready to hold talks with you,” said Defence Minister Pervez Khattak after the house had already witnessed a verbal brawl between Mr Dawar and Communications Minister Murad Saeed. “However, if you continue to talk against the insti

ISLAMABAD: Amid major revenue shortfalls, the government on Monday increased the price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) by more than 11 per cent while the rates of all other petroleum products remained unchanged for October to earn more than Rs4.2 billion in windfall revenue over lower international prices. The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) had recommended up to 2.6pc cut in local petroleum products in line with falling international oil prices. However, the government decided to earn as much additional revenue because of around Rs100bn first quarter shortfall in revenue target. Interestingly, the government did not pass on the benefit of lower international oil prices to consumers on the premise that it expected increase in prices next month. “The government has decided to maintain t

KE claims supply from national grid reduced

KARACHI: Karachiites could face power outages more than they suffered every day in the name of loadshedding, and those living in exempted areas could also undergo the same under a load management plan announced by K-Electric (KE) on Monday. The power company blamed the National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC) for a reduced supply since Sept 29. In a statement, the power utility said that it was facing a 250MW shortfall in supply from the national grid that could lead to power outages in some city areas at a time of rising temperatures. “The national grid’s 500kV Hubco-NKI line has been under forced outage since Sept 29 due to which there is an unforeseen reduction [of] up to 250MW power supply from the national grid to the K-Electric system,” it said. “K-Electric is making all possible efforts to manage the power shortfall created due to this situation in light of the rising temperatures following rain and compounded by the insignificant power supply from [the] 150MW wi

Sindh CM’s arrest to be seen as crossing the red line, warns Bilawal

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Monday warned the government against arresting the Sindh chief minister, saying this would constitute crossing a red line. Talking to reporters outside Adiala jail where he went to visit his father, former president Asif Ali Zardari, he said such an irresponsible move would evoke a reaction so strong that the JUI-F’s Azadi March would be forgotten. About cases against Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, he said the court itself had asked on whose directives the names of Mr Shah and Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari had been included in the JIT report. “There is no reason morally, constitutionally and otherwise for Syed Murad Ali Shah to be arrested and if he is, then it will be a bad omen for the federation because he is the chief minister of a federating unit who has been elected CM with the greatest majority in the history of Sindh province”, he remarked. "Oil supplies will be disrupted and oil prices will jump to unimaginably high numbers that we haven't seen in our lifetimes," the crown prince said. MBS said a war between Saudi Arabia and Iran would be catastrophic for the world economy. "The region represents about 30 per cent of the world's energy supplies, about 20 per cent of global trade passages, about four per cent of the world GDP.
