Golden Globes delayed till Feb 2021 due to pandemic

Next year’s Golden Globes will take place on February 28, an unusually late date for the glitzy film and television award show as Hollywood scrambles to adjust to the coronavirus pandemic. The Globes, which are typically held in early January, will take the weekend previously reserved for the Oscars, which last week were delayed by eight weeks to April 25. “The HFPA will provide further guidance around eligibility, voting period, and revised nominations announcement timing in the coming weeks,” said the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in a statement. The 78th Golden Globes will be hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, it confirmed. The statement did not specifically mention the pandemic. But coronavirus has wreaked havoc on Hollywood, closing down productions and forcing studios to delay releasing movies while theaters remain closed. Other award shows including the Baftas and the Film Independent Spirit Awards have also postponed their ceremonies. In an exceptional move, the Ac

Taliban killed 291 Afghan security personnel in past week: govt

The Taliban killed at least 291 Afghan security personnel over the past week, a top government official said Monday, accusing the insurgents of unleashing a wave of violence ahead of potential talks. The previous week was the “deadliest” in the country’s 19 years of conflict, said Javid Faisal, spokesman for the National Security Council, even as the insurgents dismissed the latest figures. The Taliban carried out 422 attacks in 32 provinces during that time, killing 291 security force personnel and wounding 550 others, Faisal said on Twitter. “Taliban’s commitment to reduce violence is meaningless, and their actions inconsistent with their rhetoric on peace,” he said. The Taliban rejected the latest government figures. “The enemy aims to hurt the peace process and intra-Afghan talks by releasing such false reports,” Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban’s spokesman in Afghanistan, told AFP. “We did have some attacks last week, but they were mostly in defence.” In a cabinet meeting Mo

Real Madrid go top of La Liga after Sociedad win

Real Madrid knocked Barcelona off the top of La Liga by beating Real Sociedad 2-1 on Sunday as Sergio Ramos rolled in another penalty before being forced off due to injury. Karim Benzema continued his excellent form by adding a second at Anoeta and while Mikel Merino gave Real Sociedad hope with seven minutes left, Madrid held on to go above Barca on head-to-head. Real Sociedad were contenders for the top four before the three-month suspension but a draw and two defeats since the restart leaves them sixth, five points adrift. Ramos scored his 20th consecutive spot-kick in the 50th minute to become La Liga’s highest ever scoring defender on 68 goals, overtaking Ronald Koeman on the all-time list. “He’s the best defender in the world,” said Zinedine Zidane. “What he has been doing and achieving for so many years is incredible.” But Ramos limped off 10 minutes later with what looked like a knee injury, which will be a huge concern for Madrid if the problem proves serious. Pakistan allows import, manufacture of Remdesivir for emergency COVID-19 use

The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan has allowed the import and manufacturing of antiviral Remdesivir for severely ill COVID-19 patients, Radio Pakistan reported on Monday. Registration letters were issued to two importers and 14 local manufacturers. Remdesivir is an experimental antiviral drug that was invented as a potential treatment for Ebola. It has been approved for emergency use in Pakistan, according to the spokesperson of the Ministry of National Health Services. DRAP’s registration board in its meeting held from June 8 to 11 had allowed the emergency use of Remdesivir. The US Food and Drug Administration granted emergency use authorisation of the drug on May 1. DRAP has only permitted health facilities treating COVID-19 patients to use the drug “in order to avoid the hoarding, profiteering and the distribution of Remdesivir through the black market, and its irrational use by healthcare professionals through private clinics.” In an advisory for the use of Remdesivi

Cobain ‘Unplugged’ guitar sells for record $6 million at auction

The guitar that grunge rock icon Kurt Cobain played during his legendary 1993 MTV Unplugged performance sold Saturday for a record $6 million, the auction house said. The retro acoustic-electric 1959 Martin D-18E that Cobain strummed for Nirvana’s career-defining performance in New York — just five months before his suicide at age 27 — sold after a bidding war to Peter Freedman, founder of RODE Microphones, Julien’s Auctions said. At $6.01 million after fees and commission, the instrument was the most expensive guitar ever sold at auction, among other records. The starting estimate was $1 million. Freedman said he plans to display the guitar in a worldwide tour, with proceeds going to benefit performing arts. “When I heard that this iconic guitar was up for auction I immediately knew it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to secure it and use it as a vehicle to spotlight the struggles that those in the performing arts are facing and have always faced,” the Australian was quoted a

Uzair Baloch’s production order issued in policemen attack case

An anti-terrorism court in Karachi issued on Monday the production order of Uzair Baloch, one of the main faces of the Lyari gang war, for attacking policemen during the Lyari operation. The Kalakot police approached the court to reopen the case against him. The police said that Baloch’s custody has been given to Central Jail, Karachi. Baloch was arrested by the Rangers on January 30, 2016. He has confessed to committing criminal activities such as murder, extorting money, encroaching on land, illegally occupying 14 sugar mills, harassing residents, and purchasing arms. He claimed that he was working with some members of the Sindh government and Karachi police. He had been nominated in nearly 62 cases pending in different ATCs which have been delayed because he wasn’t presented in court by the jail authorities. In April 2017, his custody was handed over to the Pakistan Army after he was accused of espionage and leaking information to foreign intelligence agencies. The Army Corps

This way, they will be using the facilities provided to them by schools, Shah said. “Initially teachers had been using their own facilities because there was a lockdown and schools had been closed down for three months,” he elaborated. “But now, with the smart lockdown, things are falling back into place.” Shah said schools had also made sure that they paid their teachers’ salaries from their own pockets. “There were some teachers who were employed on contract basis and laid off as their contracts were not renewed.” The chairperson acknowledged that both for parents and students, the new system of online classes was difficult

Pakistan petrol prices likely to increase from July 1

Petroleum products are likely to become more expensive in Pakistan from July 1 following a rise in the price of crude oil in the global market. The price of crude oil, which was $20 per barrel in the world market two months ago, has risen to $41.18 per barrel, showing an over 100% increase in the commodity’s price. The international price of oil has been volatile since the COVID-19 pandemic gripped the world. This period also saw a historic low in the international price of oil when it dipped below zero. In Pakistan, the volatility in international prices of oil turned into an oil crisis as several oil companies stopped selling petrol and long queues were seen at the few pumps where the fuel was available.   Economist Dr Waqar says in the budget, the government has announced that it will be fixing the petroleum levy at Rs30 per litre while an additional 17% sales tax and freight margin will also be imposed. OGRA will send a summary of the prices to the government by the end of thi

Hollywood poised for big-screen gamble as theaters reopen

After more than three months of coronavirus-mandated limbo, Hollywood is headed back to the big screen — and hoping that Russell Crowe’s road rage thriller “Unhinged” will jump-start the recovery. The action film, due out July 10, is set to be the first wide release since US theaters shut their doors in mid-March. Christopher Nolan’s much-hyped “Tenet” will follow soon after. But will the gamble pay off for those quick-moving studios? While top theater chains across the country plan to fire up their projectors in the first half of July, screens in badly-hit New York and Los Angeles don’t yet have permission to reopen. And even with social distancing and sanitation measures boosted, moviegoers’ enthusiasm for piling into dark, enclosed auditoriums amid a possible “second wave” of virus cases may fluctuate. AMC, the world’s largest theater chain, caused a stir by initially declining to mandate face masks, saying it did not want to be “drawn into a political controversy.”  It did a
