Australia PM vows to outlaw ‘apocalyptic’ climate activism

SYDNEY: Australia’s pro-coal government threatened harsh new penalties against “apocalyptic” activism Friday as a global wave of climate protests has become increasingly disruptive for the country’s lucrative mining industry. Prime minister Scott Morrison told a peak mining body that his conservative government was seeking ways to legislate against activists engaged in “secondary boycotts”, or pressuring firms not to deal with the resources industry. “We are working to identify serious mechanisms that can successfully outlaw these indulgent and selfish practices that threaten the livelihoods of fellow Australians,” Morrison said at an event in the mineral-rich state of Queensland. “The right to protest does not mean there is an unlimited licence to disrupt people’s lives and disrespect your fellow Australians.” Morrison has been ratcheting up the rhetoric since his surprise election victory early this year when a political gamble ahead of the vote to green-light a huge new coal mi

The four-kilometre-long corridor, which will be inaugurated on November 9, will provide pilgrims a visa-

Virtual reality: game-changing revolution in eSports

PARIS: Encased in headsets and carrying electronic replicas of weapons in their hands, the players prowl around the arena, ducking behind virtual obstacles before emerging to shoot at the enemy. All around, screens allow an enthralled public to follow the action live at Paris Games Week, where the company SmartVR studio has installed an immense arena to hold the first virtual reality (VR) competition in its popular game After-H. Industry participants agree that such groundbreaking VR technology is going to be crucial to the future of eSports, although it remains unclear how radical the revolution will be and whether it will change the nature of eSports for good. “The future is going to be VR,” said Jean Mariotte, cofounder of SmartVR Studio. “The ‘in-game’ experience is, to a certain extent, the dream of every player. To feel oneself move inside a game and this way experience it more intensely,” he said. “There will be eSports before and after VR,” added Laurent Michaud, directo

US House formalizes Trump impeachment process in landmark vote

WASHINGTON: A deeply divided Congress formally opened a new, public phase of its investigation into Donald Trump on Thursday as US lawmakers voted for the first time to advance the impeachment process targeting the US president. “Today the House takes the next step forward as we establish the procedures for open hearings… so that the public can see the facts for themselves,” said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Washington’s top Democrat. “What is at stake in all of this is nothing less than our democracy.” The House of Representatives voted along party lines, 232 to 196, to pass a resolution that lays out guidelines for the next stages of the impeachment process. All Republicans opposed the measure, despite agitating for weeks for such a vote that could end the secretive depositions and bring the process into the open. Democrats are seeking to learn whether Trump abused his presidential power by pressuring a foreign government to investigate a domestic political rival. Trump has repe

Pemra bar on Fazl presser coverage illegal: PHC

PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court has ruled that the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority’s act of stopping television channels from airing the news conference of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman was illegal and a violation of the Constitution and the Pemra Ordinance, 2002. The bench had pronounced on Oct 29 a short order of accepting the petition of lawyer and JUI-F leader Obaidullah Anwar, who had challenged the Pemra’s act of stopping news channels from telecasting Mr Fazl’s news conference through verbal orders and requested the court to declare it illegal and unconstitutional. Abdul Jabbar, who lost four members of his family, shows the list of villagers who were killed in an air strike on Sept 19 in Jalalabad, Afghanistan.—AP WASHINGTON: A US advocacy group, Human Rights Watch (HRW), accused CIA-backed Afghan paramilitaries on Thursday of committing extrajudicial executioner, orchestrating enforced disappearances and attacking medical facilities. The hard-hitting report also details changes in the US targeting rules which, HRW says, have led to indiscriminate airstrikes being called in by these forces and causing disproportionate harm to civilians. The report — They’ve Shot Many Like This: Abusive Night Raids by CIA-Backed Afghan Strike Forces — has also documented individual cases of abuses by CIA-backed Afghan paramilitary forces. It claims that the abuses follow set patterns, which are repeated and widespread in every province where such units operate. Pakistan’s own pollution causes smog, say experts

LAHORE: As Lahore’s smog levels crossed 550 on the Air Quality Index — signified as hazardous — environmental experts and activists both express their dismay and horror at what is to unfold further. According to some instruments installed in Lahore, the Gulberg area even recorded 600 AQI. The last level of ‘hazardous’ on the AQI is shown as between 250 to 300 which necessitates the people with heart and lung diseases, older adults and children should remain indoors and keep activity levels low. All outdoor physical activity must be avoided, says the index. Imran Khalid, who holds a PhD in Environmental Policy, says that in cooler weather (autumn and winter), the warm air does not allow the cooler air underneath to rise which leads to visible smog and this is what is being witnessed in Lahore and even as far as Islamabad. “Some of the sources for this smog include vehicular pollution with very poor fuel quality being used along with lack of pollution control technologies in our vehic

Kevin Spacey sexual assault case dropped after accuser dies

Los Angeles prosecutors have rejected a sexual assault case against Kevin Spacey  because the accuser has died. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office announced the decision Tuesday. The case stemmed from a masseur’s allegations that Spacey inappropriately touched him during a massage session at a home in Malibu, California, in October 2016. The decision states that the allegations against Spacey could not be proven without the masseur’s participation. The man also sued Spacey under the alias John Doe in a case that remains pending in federal court. An email sent to Spacey’s lawyer Alan Jackson was not immediately returned. Massachusetts prosecutors in July dropped a criminal case against Spacey filed after accusations that he groped an 18-year-old man at a bar on the resort island of Nantucket in 2016. In that case, Spacey’s accuser invoked his Fifth Amendment right not to testify about text messages from the night of the alleged groping that the defence claimed were

Twitter to ban political ads worldwide on its platform

WASHINGTON: Twitter said Wednesday it would stop accepting political advertising globally on its platform, responding to growing concerns over misinformation from politicians on social media. Chief executive Jack Dorsey tweeted that while internet advertising “is incredibly powerful and very effective for commercial advertisers, that power brings significant risks to politics, where it can be used to influence votes to affect the lives of millions.” The move comes with Facebook under pressure to apply fact-checking to politicians running ads with debunked claims. Dorsey said the new policy, details of which will be unveiled next month and enforced from November 22, would ban ads on political issues as well as from candidates. “We considered stopping only candidate ads, but issue ads present a way to circumvent,” he said. “Additionally, it isn’t fair for everyone but candidates to buy ads for issues they want to push. PM orders suspension of Islamabad airport officials

RAWALPINDI: Taking serious notice of maltreatment of passengers by the Airport Security Force (ASF) personnel at Islamabad International Airport, Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday ordered suspension of officials including the airport manager under the rules. The incident happened on October 17, when a Pakistan International Airlines flight from Saudi Arabia to Peshawar was diverted to Islamabad due to bad weather. After landing at the airport, the passengers had to wait for several hours due to bad weather which led to their protest. The quarrel between passengers and the ASF staff started when the latter made an attempt to stop the protesters from leaving the airport lounge as some of the passengers wanted to reach Peshawar by road. Besides ordering their suspension, Prime Minister Imran Khan directed the Civil Aviation Authority director general to initiate disciplinary proceedings against them for not dealing with the situation in a professional manner. Drummer ’emotional’ as Beatles come together in new recording

WEST HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA: When Ringo Starr decided to record a cover of one of the last songs written by John Lennon, the Beatles drummer knew he wanted former bandmate Paul McCartney to play bass. Then, his record producer found a way to bring in a bit of the late George Harrison. The producer, Jack Douglas, inserted strings from Here Comes the Sun – one of the few Beatles hits written by Harrison – into the Starr’s recording of the song Grow Old with Me. “We’re all on it now,” Starr, in an interview with Reuters, said of the musical reunion. “I had nothing to do with that.” Grow Old with Me is a single on Starr’s new album called What’s My Name . Lennon had recorded a demo of Grow Old with Me  for his 1980 release Double Fantasy,  but the song never made it onto that album. Starr, 79, said Lennon’s voice can be heard on the demo saying “this’ll be great for you, Ringo.” “It was emotional listening to John’s version, cause he’d written other songs for me,” Starr said. “So I
