FIA claims decline in cybercrime despite 40pc increase in internet use

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) claimed on Thursday that cybercrime cases, including financial crimes, had shown a declining trend despite a 40 per cent increase in the use of internet, especially online shopping, during the lockdown across the country triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic. However, some businessmen involved in online trade of goods dispute the FIA’s claim. According to these businessmen, as there has been an increase in data usage during the lockdown and many people spend far more time online than usual, including performing day-to-day tasks such as shopping, banking, watching content and socializing, cyber criminals have seized the opportunity to exploit the crisis by adapting and changing their modes of operation and criminal activities. The Cyber Crimes Wing (CCW) of the FIA said that the reduction in cyber financial crimes across the country during the lockdown was due to “effective measures” adopted by the agency. Pressure grows to relax lockdowns as economies flounder

PARIS: The world’s economic pain was on full display with new bleak evidence on Thursday from Europe and the United States of the mounting devastation wrought on jobs and economies by coronavirus lockdown measures. In Europe, where over 132,000 people with the virus have died so far, fears about new infection spikes were tempering hopes that economies now on government-funded life support will regain their vigour as workers return to factories, shops and offices. New unemployment figures covering the 19 European countries that use the shared euro currency underscored how massive job-protection programmes are temporarily keeping millions of Europeans on payroll, sparing them the record-setting flood of layoffs that is battering tens of millions of Americans. The European economy shrank a record 3.8 per cent in the first quarter as lockdowns turned cities into ghost towns and plunged nations into recession. The drop was the biggest since eurozone statistics began in 1995 and compares

Mother sends son to buy groceries amid lockdown, he returns with wife

NEW DELHI: Police in India’s Uttar Pradesh were left shocked after a mother came to the police station complaining that she had sent her son to buy groceries but he returned with his wife. “I had sent my son to do the grocery shopping today, but when he returned, he came back with his wife. When the police asked Guddu, the 26-year-old groom about the incident, he said that he married his wife, Savita two months ago at an Arya Samaj temple in Haridwar. However, he was unable to avail the marriage certificate due to lack of witnesses. Later, when he decided to revisit the Uttarakhand town for the document, the lockdown restrictions had already been imposed. He told officials that his wife had been staying at a rented accommodation in Delhi since then. He decided to take her to his home on Wednesday after the homeowner asked her to vacate the flat due to the lockdown. The police department suggested the

The decision was announced by the finance ministry in a balancing act to share the drastic fall in international oil prices between the consumers already affected by coronavirus-induced lockdown and the public revenues facing shortfalls after consultations with representatives of the International Monetary Fund. Under the announcement, the ex-depot price of petrol was fixed at Rs81.58 per litre, showing a reduction of Rs15 or 15pc from the existing rate of Rs96.58. In doing so, the government increased its taxes by Rs5.68 per litre.
