Taliban killed 291 Afghan security personnel in past week: govt

The Taliban killed at least 291 Afghan security personnel over the past week, a top government official said Monday, accusing the insurgents of unleashing a wave of violence ahead of potential talks. The previous week was the “deadliest” in the country’s 19 years of conflict, said Javid Faisal, spokesman for the National Security Council, even as the insurgents dismissed the latest figures. The Taliban carried out 422 attacks in 32 provinces during that time, killing 291 security force personnel and wounding 550 others, Faisal said on Twitter. “Taliban’s commitment to reduce violence is meaningless, and their actions inconsistent with their rhetoric on peace,” he said. The Taliban rejected the latest government figures. “The enemy aims to hurt the peace process and intra-Afghan talks by releasing such false reports,” Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban’s spokesman in Afghanistan, told AFP. “We did have some attacks last week, but they were mostly in defence.” In a cabinet meeting Mo

Real Madrid go top of La Liga after Sociedad win

Real Madrid knocked Barcelona off the top of La Liga by beating Real Sociedad 2-1 on Sunday as Sergio Ramos rolled in another penalty before being forced off due to injury. Karim Benzema continued his excellent form by adding a second at Anoeta and while Mikel Merino gave Real Sociedad hope with seven minutes left, Madrid held on to go above Barca on head-to-head. Pakistan petrol prices likely to increase from July 1

Petroleum products are likely to become more expensive in Pakistan from July 1 following a rise in the price of crude oil in the global market. The price of crude oil, which was $20 per barrel in the world market two months ago, has risen to $41.18 per barrel, showing an over 100% increase in the commodity’s price. The international price of oil has been volatile since the COVID-19 pandemic gripped the world. This period also saw a historic low in the international price of oil when it dipped below zero. In Pakistan, the volatility in international prices of oil turned into an oil crisis as several oil companies stopped selling petrol and long queues were seen at the few pumps where the fuel was available.   Economist Dr Waqar says in the budget, the government has announced that it will be fixing the petroleum levy at Rs30 per litre while an additional 17% sales tax and freight margin will also be imposed. OGRA will send a summary of the prices to the government by the end of thi

Hollywood poised for big-screen gamble as theaters reopen

After more than three months of coronavirus-mandated limbo, Hollywood is headed back to the big screen — and hoping that Russell Crowe’s road rage thriller “Unhinged” will jump-start the recovery. The action film, due out July 10, is set to be the first wide release since US theaters shut their doors in mid-March. Christopher Nolan’s much-hyped “Tenet” will follow soon after. But will the gamble pay off for those quick-moving studios? While top theater chains across the country plan to fire up their projectors in the first half of July, screens in badly-hit New York and Los Angeles don’t yet have permission to reopen. And even with social distancing and sanitation measures boosted, moviegoers’ enthusiasm for piling into dark, enclosed auditoriums amid a possible “second wave” of virus cases may fluctuate. AMC, the world’s largest theater chain, caused a stir by initially declining to mandate face masks, saying it did not want to be “drawn into a political controversy.”  It did a
