Headlines 9am: MQM leader makes revelations, Rangers attack investigation continues

Here are the headlines from SAMAA TV’s 9am bulletin.

  • Renowned Shia scholar Allama Talib Jauhari has passed away in Karachi at the age of 81. He passed away at a private hospital and his body has been taken to the Ancholi Imambargah where his funeral prayers will be offered today after Zuhr prayers. He will be buried at the Wadi Hussain Graveyard. Prime Minister Imran Khan, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and other political leaders have expressed their grief at his passing.
  • The investigation report in the PIA plane crash has been prepared and will be handed over to the aviation division today. It contains the pilot’s conversation with the air traffic controller, flight data records, cockpit voice records and CCTV footage of the plane’s belly landing. Ninety-seven people lost their lives in the May 22 crash.
  • Muhammad Anwar, a close aide of MQM founder Altaf Hussain, has admitted to receiving money from India. Speaking to SAMAA TV, he said the point of contact was Nadeem Nusrat and the money was taken for the party. I didn’t spend a penny on myself, he said. He said people responsible for murder and mayhem in Karachi are still there. He wants to do something for the country and has said anyone who wants to contact him should.
  • An investigation is under way into three attacks on Rangers personnel in Karachi, Larkana and Ghotki. Security agencies have taken multiple suspects into custody and the police said some of them were on the watch list. Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi says the Modi government is under pressure and questions are arising after the Ladakh incident. He said they may activate their sleeper cells and that such things have happened in Karachi before.
  • A Pakistan Army patrol came under fire in South Waziristan on Sunday. Two soldiers, including a captain, were martyred and two others injured. One attacker was killed in the resulting shootout.

IT ministry forms panel to review social media rules

ISLAMABAD: While uproar against the new rules to regulate social media continues from various segments of society, including parliamentarians, the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) and civil society, the information technology ministry on Friday formed a committee to review the rules. The federal cabinet approved the rules on Feb 11, but later after opposition from various quarters, including companies that manage different social media platforms, the prime minister announced that a fresh consultation process would be launched over the Citizens Protection (Against Online Harm) Rules 2020. The committee formed by the IT ministry is headed by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority Chairman Amir Azeem Bajwa while its members are Eazaz Aslam Dar, additional secretary of IT; Tania Aidrus, member of the Strategic Reforms Imple­mentation Unit, Prime Minister Office; and Dr Arslan Khalid, focal person on digital media at the PM Office. IS confirms Baghdadi’s death, vows revenge

Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.—AP BEIRUT: The Islamic State militant group confirmed the death of its leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in a statement on Thursday and named his replacement as Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Quraishi. “We mourn you ... commander of the faithful,” said Abu Hamza al-Quraishi — presented as the group’s new spokesman — in an audio statement. Baghdadi, who led IS since 2014 and was the world’s most wanted man, was killed in a US special forces raid in Syria’s province of Idlib on Sunday. The group also confirmed the killing in another raid the following day of the group’s previous spokesman Abu Hassan al-Muhajir.
