Two MQM affiliates given death penalty in Zahra Shahid murder case

Zahra Shahid

KARACHI: An anti-terrosim court (ATC) on Friday announced death sentence for two MQM members involved in PTI leader Zahra Shahid murder case.

While announcing its verdict in the case, the ATC awarded death sentences to Rashid alias ‘Tailor’ and Zahid Abbas Zaidi for the killing of the PTI leader. Other two suspects in the case, Irfan and Kaleem, were acquitted owing to the lack of evidence, as per court’s verdict.

The prosecutor of Rangers told the court that the penalized accused were affiliated with Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and they accepted of being guilty in Zahra Shahid’s killing during the investigation.

Ms Shahid was shot dead outside her residence in Karachi’s Defence Housing Authority Phase-IV in May 2013, ostensibly in an attempted robbery incident.

She had formerly served as the president of women’s wing of the party in Sindh, and was a member of the central executive committee of the party as well. Zahra Shahid Hussain’s murder was committed on the eve of an important reelection that was to take place between Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf and Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM).

Young girl’s tragic story makes her symbol of Yemen war

Buthaina Mansur al-Rimi’s life has changed drastically since last year — orphaned in Sanaa, the little girl controversially ended up in Saudi Arabia for medical care and has just returned to Yemen’s capital. Her entire immediate family was wiped out in an air strike by a Saudi-led coalition that backs Yemen’s government, using an explosive device Amnesty International says was made in the US. Images of Buthaina’s rescue and a picture of her swollen and bruised at a hospital trying to force open one of her eyes with her fingers were beamed worldwide. That international fame saw her become something of a propaganda pawn in the war between Yemen’s Iran-backed Huthi rebels and Saudi media. “I was in my mother’s room with my father, sisters, brother and uncle, the first missile hit, and my father went to get us sugar to get over the shock, but then the second missile hit, and then the third,” she says. “And then the house fell,” adds the little girl, who says she is eight. It was the
