Headlines 9am: Tariq Aziz’s funeral prayers offered in Lahore

Here are the headlines from SAMAA TV’s 9am bulletin.

  • Neighbourhoods of six Karachi districts will be put under a lockdown from 7pm today for 15 days as coronavirus hot spots have emerged in these areas. Anyone entering or exiting these areas will have to wear a mask, movement will be restricted and no private family gatherings will be allowed. No home delivery or take-away will be permitted from restaurants either. No public transport or ride-hailing services will be allowed to operate.
  • Nine petrol companies used pressure tactics and created a petrol crisis in the country so that the government would relent and allow them to increase petrol prices, concluded Petroleum Division officials in an inquiry report. An eight-member committee headed by the director-general of oil sent the inquiry report to the prime minister.
  • Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa headed a Corps Commander Conference. The participants expressed satisfaction on the positive development in the Afghan peace process. The army chief affirmed the military’s support to the government in natural catastrophes as well as other issues concerning the safety of Pakistanis.
  • Legendary TV show host Tariq Aziz passed away on Wednesday at the age of 84 in Lahore. He was best known for the quiz show Neelam Ghar on PTV which was later renamed The Tariq Aziz Show (1997) and later Bazm-e-Tariq Aziz (2006). Aziz was diabetic and according to his wife, taken to the hospital in the morning after he complained about feeling ill. His funeral prayers were held in Lahore’s Garden Town.

Today’s outlook: Sindh CM discusses reopening markets with PM Khan

Here are some of the stories we are expecting to follow today (Thursday): Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah will take Prime Minister Imran Khan into confidence over reopening shops and markets across the province. The reopened markets will have to follow SOPs. Sindh Transport Minister Awais Qadir Shah will discuss SOPs with transporters for resuming public transport in the coming days. The meeting will be held at the Sindh Assembly building at 1:30pm. The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority has proposed a price cut of Rs20.68 per litre for petrol in its summary. Today’s outlook: Federal Cabinet discusses COVID-19, Islamabad eases lockdown

Here are some of the news stories we are expecting to follow today (Tuesday): Prime Minister Imran Khan will chair a meeting of the Federal Cabinet in Islamabad to discuss the current situation in the country because of the novel coronavirus. The Cabinet will approve decisions made in the last Economic Coordination Committee meeting along with a relief package for journalists. The Islamabad High Court will hear a case pertaining to giving relief to textile mills in paying their electricity bills. The court had asked the mill owners to ensure a guarantee that they’ll not lay off any daily wage worker. The Sindh government has resumed operations of 153 more factories. They have directed them to follow all SOPs. The Islamabad administration has eased the lockdown. Hiking trails and parks across the federal capital have been reopened for the public.
