Pakistan to host Africa moot in September: Shah Mehmood Qureshi

ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi has said Pakistan will host Africa conference in September and ambassadors of African countries will be invited for the moot, ARY News reported on Tuesday. Pakistan’s foreign minister was speaking at Pakistan-Africa Round-table Dialogue, to be hosted by the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to commemorate the Africa Day. Foreign Minister Qureshi said that there are vast opportunities of trade and investment in African countries. Trump wants forces reduced in Afghanistan by next US election: Pompeo

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump wants combat forces reduced in Afghanistan by the next US presidential election, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Monday, introducing a timeline to Washington’s plan for cutting troop numbers there. Trump’s South Asia strategy, unveiled in August 2017, called for an open-ended deployment of US forces with the goal of compelling the Taliban to negotiate peace with the Kabul government to end nearly 18 years of war. “That’s my directive from the president of the United States,” Pompeo told The Economic Club of Washington when asked whether he expects Trump to reduce troops in Afghanistan before the November 2020 election. “He’s been unambiguous: End the endless wars, draw down, reduce. Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed takes oath as acting CJP

ISLAMABAD: Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed on Tuesday sworn in as the acting Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), reported ARY News. Chief Justice of Pakistan Asif Saeed Khosa and the most senior judge of the apex court after him, Justice Gulzar Ahmad has left for Russia to represent Pakistan at the judicial conference. The oath-taking ceremony was held in Islamabad, which was attended by Judges ad senior lawyers. Justice Umar Ata Bandial administered the oath to him. PM Khan expresses sorrow over loss of precious lives in Rawalpindi plane crash

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday expressed grief and sorrow over the loss of precious lives in the aircraft crash in Rawalpindi. He offered his condolences with the bereaved families and prayed for the recovery of those injured in the incident. At least eighteen people including five crew members embraced martyrdom and twelve civilians were injured after a Pakistan Army Aviation aircraft on a routine training flight crashed in Rawalpindi this morning. According to the ISPR, the aircraft crashed in built up area resulting into 12 fatal civilian casualties. The crew members martyred in the incident, including two pilots, were Lieutenant Colonel Saqib, Lieutenant Colonel Waseem, Naib Subedar Afzal, Havaldar Ibne Ameen and Havaldar Rehmat. Rescue teams of Pakistan Army and 1122 reached the site immediately and started the rescue operation. The fire that broke out after the crash has been extinguished and the injured have been shifted to hospitals in Rawalpindi. Read m

China to help FBR reduce misdeclarations

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and China have decided to enter into an agreement to control misdeclaration at the country’s ports as the menace has been causing massive revenue losses and hurting foreign investment. The decision comes at a time when the government is taking measures to control corruption within the customs department systematically. “We have authorised Pakistan’s ambassador to China Naghmana Hashmi to sign the draft Memorandum of Understanding (MoU),” said the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Chairman Shabbar Zaidi on Monday. The draft for the MoU was prepared by China’s State Administration of Taxes to enable tax authorities from both Islamabad and Beijing to share data and learn from each other’s best practices. China has come a long way in controlling misdeclaration at ports.
