Trump says he urged team to ‘slow’ COVID-19 testing

US President Donald Trump said Saturday he was encouraging health officials in his administration to slow down coronavirus testing, arguing that increased tests lead to more cases being discovered. The president has claimed falsely on several occasions that surges of COVID-19 in several states can be explained by greater numbers of diagnostic tests. At his first rally since the outbreak forced nationwide shutdowns in March, Trump told the crowd in Tulsa, Oklahoma that testing was a “double-edged sword.” The United States — which has more deaths and cases than any other country — has carried out more than 25 million coronavirus tests, placing it outside the top 20 countries in the world, per capita. “Here is the bad part: When you do testing to that extent, you are going to find more people, you will find more cases,” Trump argued. “So I said to my people ‘slow the testing down.’ They test and they test.” It was not clear from Trump’s tone if he was playing to the crowd, who chee

Four killed, over 16 injured as jeep plunges into Neelum River

MUZAFFARABAD: Four people were killed while more than 14 others injured when a jeep fell into the Neelum River in wee hours on Sunday, ARY News reported. According to the assistant commissioner, they were going to a wedding ceremony when the accident occurred. He said the ill-fated vehicle plunged into the river while negotiating a hairpin bend. The deceased and the injured were taken to the nearby tehsil hospital. Some of the injured are stated to be in critical condition. In a separate road mishap, three people were killed and another was injured when the vehicle they were travelling in turned turtle on the motorway near Mureedwala. Two brothers were among the deceased. The injured were shifted to a nearby medical facility. The deceased were on their way to Lahore when the accident took place. ‘Ring of fire’ solar eclipse begins in Pakistan

KARACHI: The annular solar eclipse, popularly known as the ‘ring of fire’ has begun in Pakistan, ARY News reported on Sunday. Annular eclipses occur when the Moon — passing between Earth and the Sun — is not quite close enough to our planet to completely obscure sunlight, leaving a thin ring of the solar disc visible. They occur every year or two, and can only been seen from a narrow pathway across the planet. According to the  met office , apart of southern parts of Pakistan, the solar eclipse would also be visible in parts of Africa including the Central African Republic, Congo and Ethiopia and in northern parts of India and China. Coronavirus kills 119 more people, infects 4,951

ISLAMABAD: The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) killed 119 more people in the country over the previous 24 hours, taking the death toll from the disease to 3,501. According to the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), 4,951 fresh cases were detected during this period, taking the national tally of the infected cases to 176,614. 4,951 new infections were detected when 28,855 tests were conducted over the past 24 hours. A total of 10,716,42 tests have been conducted in the country. More than 150,224 COVID-19 patients are under treatment. TEHRAN: A man in Iran was taken aback when he inserted a card in an automated teller machine (ATM) to withdraw cash but petrol came out of it instead of money. According to details, the man entered the ATM kiosk to withdraw money and put his card in the machine but instead of money, petrol started coming out of it. A video has gone viral showing the leak of petrol instead of money when the man inserts the card in the ATM.  Petrol came out due to a leak in an oil pipeline passing underground, according to reports. Kidnappers kill target’s husband in Karachi’s Gulshan-e-Maymar

A man was shot dead during an attempted kidnapping in Karachi’s Gulshan-e-Maymar on Saturday night. He was trying to stop a group of men from kidnapping his wife. Four suspects entered the couple’s home in Gulshan-e-Maymar and shot the woman’s husband Siraj when he resisted the attempted kidnapping. He was shot six times.
