Tensions flare between Sudan military rulers, protesters

KHARTOUM: Sudan’s military rulers said  Tuesday that six members of the security forces were killed during protests, as tensions mounted over the makeup of a new joint civilian-military council. Demonstrators reinforced their barricades outside the army headquarters in Khartoum after the two sides differed in talks Monday on the number of council seats for civilians and military representatives. The joint body is supposed to replace the military council that took power after the army ousted veteran president Omar al-Bashir on April 11 in the face of mass protests against his three-decade rule. But the two sides are at odds over its composition, with the military pushing for a 10-member council including seven military representatives and three civilians. Risking the anger of demonstrators, a top Sudanese general announced Tuesday that the new body would be headed by current military ruler General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan. Protesters have called the military council headed by Burhan

UK police probe hundreds of premature hospital deaths

LONDON: British police opened an investigation on Tuesday into a hospital where hundreds of patients are believed to have died prematurely after being given powerful painkillers. Police are examining the care provided to patients who died at Gosport War Memorial Hospital in southern England between 1987 and 2001, police said in a statement. A review last year found that more than 450 people had their lives shortened at the hospital while another 200 were “probably” also given strong opioids. “This is a highly complex and emotive case that some family members have been living with for more than 30 years,” said Nick Downing, the police officer who has been reviewing the findings of the review. “I hope the news that we will now be carrying out a full investigation is of some comfort to them,” he said. Maggie Cheetham told the BBC she wanted “closure” for her aunt Ethel Thurston who died in 1999 aged 78 after being admitted to the hospital following a fall. “All she needed was some

‘Trump has made more than 10,000 ‘false or misleading’ claims in office’

After just over 800 days in office, United States President Donald Trump has made more than 10,000 “false or misleading claims”, according to a tally released Monday by  the  Washington Post . The count, kept by the newspaper’s “Fact Checker” database, was started in the Republican leader’s first 100 days in office in early 2017. At the time, Trump averaged just five false claims a day. In the past seven months, that total has risen to an average of nearly 23 every day, made at rallies, on Twitter, in speeches or in encounters with the media. During his “Make America Great Again” rallies, Trump has taken the most liberties with the truth, the  Post  said: 22 per cent of his erroneous comments are made at rallies of his dedicated supporters. Another notable element of these claims is that the former reality television star — who frequently rails against the “fake news” media — has a tendency to repeat the same false formulas again and again. The  Post  said the president passed the

Kabul on lockdown as assembly discusses peace with the Taliban

Afghanistan's usually bustling capital Kabul slowed to a crawl Tuesday amid massive security for a high-stakes peace summit that has previously been a target for insurgent attacks. Police flooded the city and authorities blocked off key roads around the venue of the so-called “loya jirga” — where some 3,000 tribal elders, religious figures, and politicians from across Afghanistan are gathering over four days to discuss possible conditions for a peace deal with the Taliban. Taliban suicide bombers armed with rockets and guns attacked a 2010 peace jirga at the same venue, and in 2011, two rockets were fired into Kabul during a two-day jirga. Despite such past attacks, Kabul residents are infuriated with the scale of the lockdown, which has already been blamed for at least one death and has paralysed businesses in what would ordinarily be a busy week before Ramadan begins. Local media reported that a newborn baby died when the father, who was trying to take the infant to a hospita

Trump sues banks in bid to stop Congress subpoenas

US President Donald Trump, along with his family and businesses, on Monday sued Deutsche Bank and Capital One in an attempt to stop them from complying with Congressional subpoenas issued as part of a probe into foreign political influence. The subpoenas — which the Trumps described in their suit as “intrusive and overbroad” — were issued to several banks by the Democratic-majority House’s intelligence and financial services committees, which are looking into the president’s finances as part of a larger probe into election meddling by Russia. The lawsuit is the latest step in Trump’s fightback against the Democrats, and alleges that the subpoenas have “no legitimate or lawful purpose”. “The subpoenas were issued to harass President Donald J. Trump, to rummage through every aspect of his personal finances, his businesses, and the private information of the President and his family, and to ferret about for any material that might be used to cause him political damage,” said the suit,

An accountability court in Lahore on Tuesday accepted the National Accountability Bureau's (NAB) plea to close an 19-year-old inquiry against Punjab Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi and PML-Q chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain due to lack of evidence. The anti-corruption watchdog had opened an inquiry into the matter in year 2000 and found that the two allegedly purchased the pieces of land through their frontmen Mirza Aslam Baig and Mohammad Nawaz. During today's proceedings, the investigation officer (IO) presented the findings of the inquiry in court and said that no evidence could be found to suggest that the Chaudhry brothers were involved in the purchase of the land. He informed the court that the plots were purchased by the Chaudh

'Unforgivable damage will occur if bail is not extended': Nawaz files appeal in SC

Ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday filed an application in the Supreme Court seeking an extension in his six-week bail in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills corruption reference. The application calls for an extension in bail — which expires on May 7 — until the verdict of his review petition of the March 26 order, which seeks permission for Sharif to leave the country. Last week, Sharif had sought the Supreme Court’s permission to go abroad for medical treatment through a review petition — four weeks into his bail, which does not allow him to leave the country. “Given the complicated and life-threatening nature of ischemic heart disease, carotid artery disease, lymphadenopathy and renal artery stenosis, from which the petitioner [Nawaz Sharif] is admittedly suffering […] it is in the interest of justice that condition imposed for the petitioner’s release on bail merits review,” argued the review petition filed by Sharif through his counsel Khawaja Haris Ahmed. It added that certain benamidars are personal servants of the accused and his family members. Punjab govt rejects Bahria Town's offer, says will build Dadhocha Dam on its own

The Punjab government on Tuesday, during a hearing in the Supreme Court, rejected Bahria Town's offer to build the Dadhocha Dam. In 2006, the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) had purchased 18,000 kanals near Rawalpindi at the site where the dam was to be built, and launched a housing scheme as a joint venture with Bahria Town. The DHA Valley scheme, meant for the bereaved families of martyred military personnel, was proposed at the dam site. On Aug 4, 2015, the SC in a suo motu case had directed the Punjab government to construct the dam at the originally proposed site. Soon after these directives, the provincial government had banned the sale and purchase of land in the area and later allocated funds for the construction of the dam in its annual development plan for 2017-18. On the SC's directives, the Punjab government in 2017 initiated the process to construct the dam at a cost of Rs7 billion to overcome the water shortage in Rawalpindi. During a November 2018 hearing of

Saudi Arabia will stick to global oil deal, pact could be extended

MOSCOW: Saudi Arabia will not rush to boost oil supply to make up for a loss of Iranian crude due to US sanctions, and will stick to a global deal on oil production, which could be extended to the end of 2019, Energy Minister Khalid al-Falih told RIA news agency. The United States decided last week not to renew exemptions from sanctions against Iran granted last year to buyers of Iranian oil, taking a tougher line than expected. Oil prices rose on concerns of a tighter oil market. Falih was speaking to Russia’s RIA news agency on Tuesday, without specifying whether, or by how much, output levels could change after June. The Saudi minister’s comments came after U.S. President Donald Trump said last week he had called OPEC and told the group to lower oil prices, without specifying to whom he spoke or whether he was referring to previous discussions with OPEC officials. Oil prices have surged by almost 40 percent since January, lifted by the OPEC+ supply cuts as well as by U.S. sanct

Airbus keeps targets after Saudi writedown takes shine off earnings

PARIS: European planemaker Airbus stuck to full-year financial targets after reporting slightly higher-than-expected core first-quarter profit, overshadowed by weaker cash and charges related to a German ban on defence exports to Saudi Arabia. The results are the first presented by new Chief Executive Guillaume Faury and finance chief Dominik Asam, who both pointed to strong demand for the A320neo jet while dismissing any expectations of a benefit from the Boeing 737 MAX crisis. Germany said last month it would extend a ban on exporting arms to Saudi Arabia, straining ties with fellow European arms exporters including France, where Airbus is based. The export ban has further snagged a long-delayed Saudi border security contract. “We are handcuffed and cannot complete the Saudi export contract as planned,” Asam told analysts, adding that Airbus would continue talks with Saudi Arabia. Airbus took a charge of 190 million euros (£164.3 million) related to the contract, with foreign e

IS chief refers to Syria defeat in first video in five years

The Islamic State group’s elusive supremo Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi made his first purported appearance in five years in a propaganda video released Monday, acknowledging IS’s defeat in the Syrian town of Baghouz while threatening “revenge” attacks. The world’s most wanted man was last seen in Mosul in 2014, announcing the birth of IS’s much-feared rule across swathes of Iraq and Syria, and appears to have outlived the proto-state. In the video released by IS’s Al-Furqan media arm, the man said to be Baghdadi referred to the monthslong fight for IS’s final redoubt Baghouz, which ended in March. “The battle for Baghouz is over,” he said, sitting cross-legged on a cushion and addressing three men whose faces have been blurred. He referred to a string of IS defeats, including its onetime Iraqi capital Mosul and Sirte in Libya, but insisted the militants had not “surrendered” territory. In a segment in which the man is not on camera, his voice described the April 21 Easter attacks in Sri
